After Microsoft and Apple, Alibaba is joining the big boy league of personal home speakers. Alibaba Group is reportedly working on its own home speaker, which is similar to the Amazon Echo. For that matter, a Reuters report claims that the Chinese company may just reveal the device by next week. While Amazon Echo was the debut home speaker in the industry, the latest to join the league is Apple s HomePod. At its annual developers conference, WWDC 2017, the California tech giant unveiled the assistant speaker or rather musicologist as Apple likes to call it. Despite the announcement, the Apple HomePod will not start shipping before the end of this year. As revealed by Apple, the home speaker will initially be available only in the US, UK and Australia starting December. In the US it will retail for $349 (approximately Rs 22,500). Apple HomePod, Google Home, and Amazon Echo are essentially internet-connected speakers which directly stream music from services like Apple Music, Google Play Music, and Amazon Prime Music. These speakers come with built-in digital assistants which are activated by voice commands. Earlier, digital assistants were only part of smartphones and with smart homes being the drive for every major tech firm, these voice-based assistants are now coming home with smart speakers which talk and respond to requests made.
While Amazon, with its Alexa-powered speakers is incessantly growing its range in the category, with the latest product being the Amazon Echo Look, Microsoft just ahead of its Build 2017 event this year also joined the league. Microsoft partnered with Harman Kardon to launch a Cortana-powered Evoke speakers. HP and Intel are also meant to join hands with Microsoft for similar products.
