Amazon has announced a product-wide price cut on its Echo devices in India. Amazon Echo Dot, the cheapest Echo smart speaker in the lineup, is now receiving a price cut of Rs 400. The Echo Dot is currently available on Amazon India for Rs 4,099 as opposed to its launch price of Rs 4,499.
Amazon Echo, the smart speaker that sits in the middle of Amazon’s entry-level and premium offering, is getting a price cut of Rs 1,000. The second-generation Echo with voice control and Dolby support is now available for Rs 8,999. Cutomers purchasing two Echo speakers can save additional Rs 1,000 on their final bill. Amazon Echo Plus, and the recently launched Echo Spot, continue to be available at their launch price of Rs 14,999 and Rs 12,999 respectively.
Amazon is the clear leader in the smart speaker segment with some analysts estimating it to maintain over 80 percent market share. However, it is now facing competition from Google Home smart speakers. According to reports, Google Home was the best-selling smart speaker during the first quarter of 2018. The discounted price of Echo Dot and Echo make them accessible to more consumers, and become even more competitive against Google Home and Google Home Mini smart speakers.
Amazon Echo and Echo Dot are wireless hands-free speakers powered with a digital assistant named Alexa. They come built-in with far-field microphones to catch the launch phrase that triggers the assistant. With Alexa, users can ask the digital assistant to play music, check weather, make phone calls, set alarms and even control smart home devices.
In terms of hardware, the Echo Dot is a puck-shaped device that includes a built-in speaker. However, it can also connect to external speakers or headphones through Bluetooth or 3.5mm headphone jack. The Echo, on the other hand, is a more powerful speaker with 360-degree omnidirectional audio output. Amazon’s Alexa is capable of stremaing music from Amazon Prime Music, Saavn and TuneIn.

Amazon Alexa comes with skills (its own version of apps) that make it a more potent voice assistant. Alexa users can summon the assistant on the speaker or their smartphone and discover new skills including for things like booking the cab or creating a shopping cart. If you already use voice assistant on your mobile phone then Echo-powered by Alexa will be a natural step-up. Alexa was recently in the news for recording a private conversion and sending it to contact and the company said it will fix the issue soon.
