Deals and sales are no new phenomenon during the festival season in India. With massive discounts, traditional brick and mortar sales draw greater number of footfalls in this season as compared to other months of the year. E-commerce sites such as Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal, however, have stolen their thunder with discounts and offers all around the year. But, with competition heating up, offline vs online and even between e-commerce sites, we are set to see a big showdown of aggressive deals and discounts this time. In fact, onus is on the e-commerce sites to offer more discounts and offers that supersede their usual daily offers. For customers, it s a totally win-win situation as they will have more options and may purchase more items even with small budget. While Snapdeal has already commenced its sales, starting tomorrow two e-commerce giants – Flipkart and Amazon — kick off their mega sales. Flipkart last year hosted online mega sale called Big Billion Day. While the online mega sale draw a lot of criticism from customers over service disruption and immediate sold-out messages, Flipkart garnered over a billion hits, and even achieved its target of $100 million, roughly Rs 615 crores, in sales (GMV) in 10 hours.
Main drivers of the mega sale were massive discounts on products and even at a throwaway price of Re 1 for several items. This year, Flipkart is back with its mega sale but will be app-exclusive — perhaps one of the strongest signals about its efforts to go app-only in the near future. We are predicting massive discounts on electronic items and other popular categories such as apparels. The e-commerce has tied up with banks such as State Bank of India, Citi Bank, Standard Chartered Yes Bank for further discounts.
Amazon India is set to crash Flipkart s party with its own mega sale called – Great Indian Festival Sale. Like Flipkart, we are likely to be treated with massive discounts across product categories. Amazon will also be hosting an app-only sale on October 16-17. App users will given 15 minutes early access to top deals while HDFC Bank users will get additional cashback up to 15 percent on app and 10 percent on desktop.
While Flipkart and Amazon are already battling it out, Paytm, one of the largest mobile commerce platforms, is also joining the competition with its own mega sale sometime this month. Paytm thrives on the cashbacks and ease of use of its service. We are most likely to see Paytm leverage the same for its mega sale.
From customers point of view, it s a great time to buy products online. These sales, unlike usual sales all around the year, offer more discounts, which perhaps will last only during these three-four days. With more e-commerce sites running sales at the same time, you can even compare the discounts and make an informed decision. If you have a relatively small budget, the throwaway pricing will ensure you can bag as many as items without having exceeded your limits. If you are looking to buy anything online, wait until tomorrow, get your accounts and address details up to date and perhaps download/update their respective apps for preferential status.
What do you think about these e-commerce sales? What items you have planned to buy in this sale season? Or, you are trying to keep yourself from the temptation? If yes, do tell us how you are managing that!
