If you shop on Amazon for transactions valuing Rs 10,000 or less, you can use the UPI method during checkout. The option is limited to mobile and not available for the desktop site. At the time of writing, the iOS version of the app did not show UPI as one of the payment options, indicating the feature might be a gradual rollout to platforms. How UPI works on Amazon India
In its Help & Customer Service section, Amazon explains how UPI works on its platform. One of the most important things to note is that UPI method can not be used in combination with Amazon Pay balance. For other methods, a combination with partial payment using Amazon Pay and remaining with COD/credit/debit card is possible.
In order to use UPI, ensure that you have the latest version of the Amazon India app installed on your device. On transactions valuing Rs 10,000 or less, you can choose UPI as the choice of payment method. On the checkout screen, you get to choose between the supported payment methods. Once you choose UPI, you will be asked to provide the UPI ID and upon verification, you will be redirected to the UPI-lined mobile app to complete the payment process.
For this, go to your UPI-linked mobile app, such as BHIM, and from the Pending Transactions tab, complete the payment. Once the payment is complete, you can see the order confirmation on your mobile app or browser. You must also ensure the payment process is completed within 10 minutes for successful placement of the order.
In case of payment failure using UPI, you will not be able to retry with the same method. You will be required to use another payment method to complete the order or place a fresh order to use UPI again. Refunds for orders using UPI will be transacted directly to the UPI-linked bank account within 2-4 business days.
As Amazon expands its foothold in India and gives a tough fight to domestic player Flipkart, integration of government-backed UPI is an evident step towards growth. The company had been planning the addition of UPI method for long and had been in discussions with a few banks as reported in July last year.
The move comes at a time when Amazon is pushing for its payments business in India. According to the report, digital payments now account for over 60 percent of Amazon India’s total transactions as compared to less than 50 percent in 2016. Part of the success is attributed to the company’s Amazon Pay wallet service which was launched in 2017 and serves as a convenient way for shoppers to pay for goods. The wallet service accounts for 48 percent of all digital transactions on Amazon India.
