Amazon India is set to launch a smartphone in collaboration with 10.or tomorrow that will rival Flipkart‘s recently launched Billion Capture+ smartphone. This upcoming smartphone dubbed 10.or D will be the third device in company’s product lineup and will go on first sale in January.
10.or already sells two smartphone models on Amazon India, but the smartphone arriving next month is said to be crafted for Amazon. “We leverage the customer data and feedback to understand the gaps in the selection, pricing and reach out to our vendors or OEMs to manufacture relevant products,” Manish Tiwary, vice president, Amazon India told ET.
The company has sent out media invites for tomorrow’s event in New Delhi, but there is no word yet on the specifications or pricing of the device. 10.or’s upcoming smartphone for Amazon India is expected to go on sale starting January 5. Amazon already helps quite a few brands kickstart their product operations via its Launchpad program. The 10.or brand also seems to be one of the brands starting operations under Amazon umbrella.
According to IDC, the Chinese smartphone makers control over 50 percent of Indian smartphone market, and it says there is scope for a new brand to enter the industry and capture some share. Amazon, which failed with its Fire phone, is likely re-entering the segment in order to grab some of the market share from the device manufacturers whose products it sells exclusively on its platform.
The 10.or D will feature a 5.2-inch HD display and will be powered by quad-core Snapdragon 425 chipset. It will arrive in two storage variants with 2GB or 3GB RAM and 16GB or 32GB internal storage. It will feature a rear-mounted fingerprint and beefy 3,500mAh battery. There is not much details in terms of specifications or price just yet but the smartphones will be priced around Rs 9,999.
Flipkart claimed that its Billion Capture+ smartphone sold out during the first sale. It would be interesting to see whether Amazon gets similar interest when it launches the 10.or-branded smartphone.
