Amazon India has quietly rolled out its subscription-based music streaming service in the country. Amazon Music is part of the Amazon Prime membership, and will give you access to the global library. It is available on across iOS, Android, and the web platform.
Amazon Prime membership is priced at Rs 999 for a year. Benefits of the prime membership include not only access to early sales on Amazon India website, but also grants you access to Prime Video service which includes a collection of online series, TV shows, movies, and original content.
With the introduction of the Amazon Music service, you will now be able to access music in a range of languages. You can set your preferences to English, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, and Rajasthani. The music content is divided into categories including Genres, Playlists, New & Trending, Stations, and so on. Earlier the service was restricted to the Amazon Echo smart speaker ecosystem. If you have been using the service through the smart speaker, your preferences will be retained on the app/browser version.
If you are an existing Prime member, you can visit music.amazon.in, select your language preference and get started. For those new to the platform, you can go to Amazon India, subscribe as a Prime member, and then gain access to the music streaming service.
The Amazon Music service, when broken down from the umbrella Prime membership, comes down to Rs 83.25 per month. In comparison, the Apple Music service costs Rs 120 per month in India, whereas Google Play Music costs Rs 99 per month. This makes Amazon Music cheaper against the rival services.
The company’s wider rollout in India follows recent reports about another global music streaming service Spotify opening its office in the country, indicating an imminent launch. Spotify competes against Apple Music in the international markets and its entry in the Indian domain would pose a new competition to existing services including Hungama Play, Gaana, Saavn, and other music services.
