Amazon Pantry, the online grocery store by e-commerce site Amazon has now been expanded to seven more Indian cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Delhi, Gurgaon, Pune, and Faridabad. The store was first launched as a pilot in Hyderabad in July earlier this year. The specialized store promises next-day delivery of grocery and household items. One can shop products by filling a virtual box of up to 15kg. The service is also available to non-Prime members at a delivery charge of Rs 20 per box. In wake of demonetization, services such as Grofers and BigBasket have gained momentum. But given the existing popularity of Amazon in India, expansion of its online grocery store marks a well-timed move. As of now, products are being offered in seven categories — Cooking Essentials, Snacks & Beverages, Baby Care & Baby Food, Household supplies and Pets, Bath and Hair Care, Skin Care and Deodrants, and Themed Boxes. For households with a fixed grocery order, AmazonPantry has a section labeled Past Orders, which allows one to repeat the purchase without having to go through the products list all over again. Currently, Amazon Pantry has launch offers where it is offering five percent discount on the purchase of products worth Rs 1,000 and 10 percent discount on the purchase of products worth Rs 2,000. Other than the mentioned cities, Amazon plans to expand its online grocery supermarket to more cities in the future. Amazon India s director for category management, consumables told ToI, “We have seen multiple times growth in sub -categories of this segments such as household, baby products, personal care. It also gives us the buying pattern of users who are shopping for these products. So yes, Amazon s FMCG push is expected to give some tough competition to the likes of Grofers and Big Basket, in the near future.
Expansion of the online grocery store arrives after Amazon launched its AmazonNow app for customers in Delhi and Mumbai. The dedicated service allows users to shop over 5,000 everyday essentials including groceries from partner stores such as Hypercity, Spar, Modern Bazaar, Easy Day, Big Bazaar, and SRS among others, and have the products delivered to their doorstep within two hours or at a pre-scheduled time. Free delivery is applicable to orders summing above Rs 350 while orders amounting to lesser than are charged Rs 29 extra for a scheduled delivery and Rs 49 for express delivery of two hours. As part of the launch, there will be no minimum order to avail the free delivery.
Recently, the company brought its Amazon Prime Video streaming service in India. The on-demand video service offers unlimited access to popular TV shows, movies, and exclusive Amazon Originals shows. Amazon Prime Video subscription is priced at Rs 499 a year. This is essentially what the Amazon Prime service costs at present in India which means you get Prime Video for free. In comparison, Netflix has its plans starting at Rs 500 a month, whereas Hotstar has its subscription priced at Rs 190 a month.
