Forget about pizzas being delivered in less than 30 minutes. If Amazon has its way, it will soon be able deliver an order at your doorstep in half an hour by using a fleet of unmanned drones under its planned Amazon Prime Air service.
These drones will be able to carry a package up to 2.3kgs in weight and the company’s goal is to deliver it to the destination in under 30 minutes. The drones are essentially Octocopters or 8-rotor helicopters which will sit at the end of the conveyor belt waiting to pick up the package. But one will have to wait to see these drones in action since the company is waiting for the government to put some regulations in place. “Putting Prime Air into commercial use will take some number of years as we advance the technology and wait for the necessary FAA rules and regulation,” Amazon said in a press release.
Amazon’s aim is to try and make this venture commercial by 2015 and hopes that one day “seeing fleets of delivery drones in the sky will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road today.”
In the meantime you can see a short demo of how this sort of delivery is going to work.
