Replicating the successful model of one-day sales in the US, Amazon India recently concluded its Prime Day sales. Held between July 10 and July 11, the sale was exclusive to Prime members of the e-commerce platform in India and offered massive discounts and lucrative offers across categories and on big brand products such as the Apple iPhone 7 and OnePlus 5. The company is now out with the results after hosting the first-ever Prime Day sale in the country. It was the first time Amazon hosted its Prime Day sale in 13 countries across the globe and quite evidently, the 30-hour sale helped Indian sellers on the portal witness tremendous growth. The Global Selling Indian sellers, which are domestic sellers offering products globally under Amazon’s Global Selling Program, witnessed growth of close to 100 percent year-on-year in sales while the Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) seller count also witnessed over 100 percent increase as compared to last year and the total selection observed a rise of over 90 percent. Amazon Prime Day debuted in 2015, but it was after two years that the company found the Indian market ready for the sale. It was only last year that the company introduced its Amazon Prime subscription service in country where it offers exclusive deals and offers to members who pay a monthly fee for services which include one-day guaranteed delivery. The company says it was the first time for some Indian sellers who participated in the Prime Day sales and for them it was the biggest day for their business as they witnessed huge spikes in their daily sales in a matter of few hours. Director & GM, Sellers Services, Amazon India, Gopal Pillai said, “Prime Day this year has been bigger and better than before for majority of our Global Selling sellers and we expect the same momentum to continue in future as well. His remarks also indicate the Prime Day sale might be repeated and turned into a regular feature. One of the baby and mom products seller on Amazon, Crocnfrog said the single Prime Day sale saw an unprecedented jump of 75x in its daily sales for the first time along with a lifetime best of 4X of the monthly sales number. Amazon attributes its successful Prime Day sale debut in India to the Global Selling Program which plays upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India‘ initiative and aims to create opportunities for Indian sellers to market their products globally. The program started in May 2015 with a few hundred sellers and in two years’ of time, boasts over 23,000 sellers who are selling over 65 million products through 10 global Amazon marketplaces.
