If you’re shopping for a new wireless portable speaker, you have plenty of options to consider today. From established brands such as JBL and Sony to smaller upstarts such as Zoook and Soundbot, you’ll find something that fits into your budget no matter what your budget is. But one brand that is gaining prominence happens to be something you can buy in exactly one place: on Amazon.
AmazonBasics is the in-house brand for Amazon, and sells a variety of products that fit into the definition of ‘basic’. The brand deals in products that include umbrellas, tripods, charging cables, dinner sets, and pet carriers, among a variety of other everyday items that you wouldn’t ordinarily think of buying online. There are also some typical electronic products, including the product we’re reviewing today, the Rs 1,999 Shockproof and Waterproof Bluetooth Wireless Mini Speaker. Read on to find out all you need to know about it.
Design and Specifications
Living up to the ‘Basics’ in its brand name, the speaker is about as basic as it gets when it comes to looks. It’s a compact device with a simple shape and styling, and is available in a single color option: black. The casing is plastic, but is built strong in order to ensure the shockproofing of the speaker. You also get a rubber strip around the middle which includes the buttons, a flap covering the auxiliary and charging ports, and a hook for attaching a clip or carabiner. The buttons are a bit firm and need a bit of effort to press, but this is part of what makes the speaker waterproof and is therefore a small sacrifice for the greater functionality of the speaker.
There are three buttons on the speaker, with the volume buttons on either side of the multi-function button that serves as the power and pairing controller. The device has a single 3W top-firing driver and passive radiator for bass, offering basic, budget-grade sound for the price. It weighs 132 grams and can run for about 10-11 hours on a full charge. While the sales package does include a cable for charging, there’s no power adapter, so you’ll either need to use the one that comes with your smartphone or plug into a computer’s USB port. We did test both claims of waterproofing and shockproofing, by dropping the speaker a number of times and also dunking it in water while it was playing, and it does in fact hold true to these claims.
The AmazonBasics Wireless Mini Speaker may be excellent on the aesthetic and functionality fronts, but how does it perform where it matters? We tried the speaker with a number of audio tracks and even for calls, and the speaker is fairly competent for the price.
Starting with Fatboy Slim’s Right Here Right Now, the first thing that strikes me about the AmazonBasics speaker is the simplicity in its sound. The sonic signature can be described as inoffensive, with enough drive and frequency spikes in all the right places. With a typical V-shaped signature, you tend to hear the bass and treble a bit more clearly, while a small drop in the mid-range can be perceived. On the whole, the sound suits typical music today, and with this classic electronica track, the beat and tune were beautifully rendered.
Moving on to Karunesh’s Punjab, I also listened for the volume and attack in the speaker. With a single 3W driver producing the audio, sound is adequate for personal use, but doesn’t get as loud as you would want if you’re using the speaker at a party or in a group. It’s ideally used at home in your own room, but its ruggedness and ability to withstand the elements means that it will serve you reliably even if you take it outdoors.
However, the speaker does lack a bit of stability. When playing at high volumes, it moves around a fair bit thanks to the reverberation of the speaker itself. This is perhaps its only weakness though, and other pros include being able to reach its peak volume with minimal distortion, and the top-firing sound which allows for 360-degree audibility.
The AmazonBasics Shockproof and Waterproof Bluetooth Wireless Mini Speaker has a number of things in its favor, thus making it an excellent product for the price. At Rs 1,999, you get reliable build quality and performance, rugged durability against damage from accidental drops as well as water, and a brand name that while not necessarily well known for its audio products, is a trusted name nonetheless. On the whole, this is a product definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a new wireless speaker at under Rs 2,000.
