Amazon India has lately been investing heavily in the Indian market with its new services like Amazon Launchpad focusing on startups in India. And now, considering the push in the Indian economy towards digitization, the company has launched an initiative to help small sellers go online. Amazon India has kickstarted a city-specific platform, which is currently only live on Bengaluru, which allows small-scale entrepreneurs and sellers operating in the area of jewellery and ethnic-apparel to display their products to buyers within the city. Eventually, Amazon plans to add other categories like home decor, to the platform as well. This program lets these sellers to showcase their products up on Amazon India, by simply registering on the website through their smartphones, the same way it works for any user registration. The service is quite similar to Amazon s Handmade service in the US that allows sellers to showcase their products on the website. Additionally, the platform also caters for individuals who want to put up their pre-owned products, under its Sell as Individual initiative, which was launched in Bengaluru last month. “We have opened up the programme for individual sellers as well as home entrepreneurs in the fashion accessories and ethnic apparel categories. We have seen 600 sellers and home entrepreneurs registered with us over the period of one-and-half months,” Mahendra Nerurkar, director of new initiatives at Amazon India told ET.
Do note, the city-specific approach of the platform means that the only users in Bengaluru will be able to see the listings posted by a seller in Bengaluru.
Additionally, Amazon India also takes care of the logistics for picking up and delivering the products. “These are mostly small sellers and we are looking at inter-city sales to meet the Amazon shopping experience. The products are delivered within three to five days and all payments are released to the sellers as they are small entrepreneurs and need working capital. The methods of payment are similar to what is offered on the Amazon India website, including cash on delivery and Amazon Pay,” said Nerurkar. In a similar push to compete with other online selling platforms like Quikr, and bring small-scale sellers and individuals on its platform, last month, Amazon India launched Sell as Individual service in Bengaluru. As the name suggests, the service lets individuals sell new and used products on the e-commerce website. It is easy to get started with, includes doorstep pickup, packing and delivery of products. Whether you are a small home entrepreneur or an individual trying to sell your products online, the service caters for all.
