Seeing your precious smartphone go through disastrous times, only to see it recover and work is an unspeakable joy. Smartphones have been known to survive some tough times, but what happened with this particular iPhone will surely delight and shock you for a moment. The winner here is Apple s iPhone 4 which has survived a year of being covered in ice. The lucky owner of this headstrong iPhone 4 is a Michael Guntrum, who is a resident of Knox, Pennsylvania. The iPhone 4 was recovered after a year of being trapped in an icy lake, and to everyone s surprise, the phone even turned on. BuzzFeed got a hold of this chap who narrated the entire story about how he lost his iPhone 4 in March 2015. Guntrum begins by saying, We were having negative-25-degree weather, so me and two buddies went ice fishing. We were sitting in our portable shanty, and I got a bite on my rod. I laid the phone on my lap, and it slipped off. Instead of landing flat in the snow, it hit its edge and rolled into the hole. I caught the fish it was a blue gill but it wasn t worth it. Guntrum thought this was the end of his iPhone and went on ahead with his life. Later in September 2015, the lake where Guntrum lost his iPhone, was drained because of some problems in its dam.
In October this year, a mechanical engineer named Daniel Kalgren from Pennsylvania, was treasure hunting with his metal detector on the very same (now drained) empty lake where the iPhone 4 was lost. He found the iPhone 4 covered below six inches of mud and clay. Kalgren was quoted by BuzzFeed as saying, I took the phone home, cleaned it, and put it in rice just out of curiosity to see if it would still work. Kalgren further said, It was the only thing I found that day. I was able to turn it on and use it to look up his number. He knows I have it now, and I m gonna mail it to him.
Kalgren then contacted Guntrum and told him that he found his phone. As expected, Guntrum did not believe it at first and he finally accepted it when he was sent a picture of his iPhone. The wallpaper on the iPhone was recognized by Guntrum as his. Guntrum s phone was protected with an OtterBox iPhone 4 case which is believed to have been one of the probable causes of the iPhone surviving. And just so you know, the iPhone 4 is not waterproof, or even slightly water resistant. Also, OtterBox is famous for its tough cases. ALSO READ: Today is the best time to buy an Apple iPhone in India
Kalgren shared a picture of the iPhone after it was fully charged and switched on. Although the display of the phone looks a little messed up, and the edges damaged, it still looks pretty decent. And by the look of it, nobody would believe that this iPhone survived after being locked in an icy lake.
Guntrum is yet to receive his long lost and recovered iPhone 4, and he said that he plans to repair it. And his plan could probably be to give it to his mom as he said, My mom needs a smartphone, so I ll give it to her.
