The long wait is over as the next iteration of Google s Android OS is finally out of beta. The new version, Android 8.0, is called Oreo, and Google has released the update for compatible Pixel and Nexus devices. Being a major software release, Android Oreo brings a host of improvements over Android Nougat. Also Read - Google Workspace now available for everyone, including free Google account owners

Google has added a new feature called background limits to extend the battery life of your smartphones. It is more like a power saver feature that limits the background apps when not in use. The next feature is notification dots, which allows the users to glance at the notifications even if they have missed them. With this feature in place, you will no longer need to pull the drop-down notification panel to check the notifications. There is also a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) mode which pops out the videos while letting you continue with your work. Google has also made the boot process faster, added new emojis along with the usual bug fixes and performance improvements. Android Oreo also beings Project Treble which aims to help OEMs deliver timely software updates without having to wait for chipset manufacturers to roll out the latest drivers. List of Android 8.0 Oreo supported devices

As usual, the Google Pixel and Nexus devices will be getting the update first, followed by smartphones from other OEMs. The list of compatible devices include Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C tablet, the Nexus 5X, the Nexus 6P and the Nexus Player.

Manufacturers such as LG, HTC, Samsung and Motorola, among others, will also be updating their supported smartphones with Android 8.0 Oreo. However, as OEMs usually have their own customizations and UIs, it may take a few months before the update is rolled out. The LG G6, HTC U11, Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, Nokia 3, 5, 6 and 8 among others have been promised to get the Android Oreo update. We expect the list of smartphones to eventually increase as manufacturers start evaluating their smartphones for the update cycle. How to update your Pixel and Nexus devices to Android 8.0 Oreo over-the-air (OTA)

Starting with Android Nougat last year, Google has simplified the installation process for everyone. The update is available to download over-the-air, and the procedure is pretty simple.

To begin with, head over to Android Beta program page from your compatible Pixel or Nexus device and sign in with your Google account. If you own an eligible device, it will give you an option to Enroll device and once that is done, restart your smartphone.

By now, you should get the update notification on your smartphone. In case haven t already received it, head to Settings > About Phone > System Update > Check Now. The update is over 1GB in size, and it may take a while until it gets downloaded, depending on your internet connection speed.

How to install Android 8.0 Oreo using factory images

You can download the factory images from Android Developer page and manually flash them on your Pixel or Nexus devices. However, it is a tedious process, and even the slightest mistake can brick your smartphone. It may also erase your data, so ensure that you have a proper backup before proceeding. To begin with, enable USB Debugging on your smartphone. To do this, go to Settings -> About Phone -> and tap 7-8 times on Build Number to unlock Developer Options. Now, under Settings -> Developer Options, enable USB Debugging.

Now, you ll have to download the factory images for your Pixel or Nexus smartphone from Android Developer website. Download the factory image for your compatible device from here. If you own a Pixel, you will have to download this file sailfish-opr6.170623.012-factory-8ada9373.zip, or if you have a Nexus 6P, you ll have to download angler-opr6.170623.013-factory-a63b2f21.zip. Next, rename the folder to something as simple as pixel.zip or nexus6p.zip

Next, you ll have to download Minimal ADB and Fastboot from here and install it. During installation, create a new folder on desktop and paste the downloaded factory image (ZIP file) into this folder. Now, inside the folder hold the shift button on your keyboard, right-click and then click on open command window here. Next, type adb reboot bootloader. (You can also switch off your device, and press a combination of Volume Up + Volume Down + Power buttons.)

If your device bootloader is locked, type fastboot flashing unlock and hit enter. Next, type flash-all and hit enter. If everything goes fine, the operating system will be installed and your device will now reboot to Android Oreo.
