As per global statistics on StatCounter, Android gained 37.93 percent while Microsoft settled at 37.91 percent. The difference here is indeed a very close deal breaker for both Android and Windows. Among other operating systems, Apple iOS comes third with just 13.09 percent share, while macOS and OS X combined managed only 5.17 percent. Decline in Microsoft Windows s marketshare has been quite evident since year 2012, when it had over 80 percent of the devices across the world. Interestingly, Android saw rise in its marketshare in the similar timeline. In 2012, Android began at just 2.4 percent of internet-connected devices and grew phenomenally since then.

During the same time iOS users also increased, while Mac OS users took a plunge. StatCounter CEO, Aodhan Cullen says the trend is a direct effect of growing popularity of smartphones over desktop and laptop computers. Cullen also highlighted the increasing importance of Asian markets with higher population such as India and China. It marks the end of Microsoft s leadership worldwide of the OS market which it has held since the 1980s. It also represents a major breakthrough for Android which held just 2.4% of global internet usage share only five years ago, Cullen revealed.

Notably, Android has got strong foothold in Asian market with Google s OS having a significant 52.2 percent marketshare against the 29.2 percent marketshare of Microsoft. However, the tables are completely turned opposite in North America, where Windows gained 39.5 percent share and iOS gets 25.7 percent share, leaving Android at third in the order with just 21.2 percent of devices. Similarly, Microsoft seem to have made European market a Windows territory with 51.7 percent share and Android at just 23.6 percent. However, the StatCounter data does not reflects the popularity of different versions of Android operating system. Windows won the desktop war but the battlefield moved on, said Cullen.

Recently, Apple iPhone market share took a massive hit sliding to fifth place in the competition against homegrown Android-based smartphone manufacturers Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. These companies offer devices in different budget segments with smartphones sporting decent specifications as well as top-notch specifications. The high-end smartphones by these Chinese brands, running mostly Android operating system targets the top layer market, primarily captured by iPhone.
