The first set of Android distribution statistics for the year 2018 are out. While the distribution for Gingerbread shows the version of the operating system still stubbornly clinging to life, Nougat, on the other hand has shown some significant growth. From what the official statistics reveal, both Oreo and Nougat have gone up compared to last December. More specifically, Android Oreo has seen a 0.2-percent increase. While that does not seem substantial, but as manufacturers like Samsung, LG and Nokia have started rolling out the Oreo update, we should see a bigger jump in the near future. On the other hand, Android Nougat, saw a 3-percent rise in adoption, bringing it up to 26.3 percent. Marshmallow, however, still continues to lead the overall distribution, despite a fall of 1.1-percent.

Lollipop, KitKat, and Jelly Bean also went down by 1.2 percent, 0.6 percent, and 0.3 percent, respectively. Interestingly, even with the adoption in the newer Nougat and Oreo versions of the operating system, both Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread have lived on. In fact, they ve stayed at the same 0.5 percent and 0.4 percent respectively, since last month.

The rise in Nougat s adoption is not surprising, considering, most devices launched in 2017, came with Nougat on-board, or the ones that didn t were soon updated by the manufacturers, to the version. As is the case with Oreo, most flagships in 2018 are expected to launch with Oreo, but it will take a significant amount of time for 2017 phones to receive the update, and by the time they do, Google will have announced Android P.
