Android's fragmentation problem has not been solved with Project Treble, at least, not yet.

Google has updated the Android distribution numbers for the month of October and surprisingly, Android 9 Pie is nowhere to be found. This is the second straight month that Google’s latest version of Android has failed to make it to the list. It raises concerns as to whether Google has failed to deliver on the promise of timely software updates with Project Treble. According to the latest data, for the 7-day period ending on October 26, 2018, Android Oreo continues to grow and is now the second most popular version of Google’s mobile operating system. It is currently powering a total of 21.5 percent of active Android devices, a gain of 2.3 percent from last month. Android Nougat, which was released in 2016, continues to remain the most popular version of Android with an active install base of nearly 28.2 percent. While it remains popular, the operating system actually saw a decline of 1.1 percent in just one month. The decline in its market share could be owed to Android OEMs updating their older devices to Android Oreo, which has seen enhanced activity in the past few months. It is still disappointing that a two generation old version remains the leader in Android’s distribution numbers.

Android Marshmallow, which was previously the second most popular version, has now dropped to third spot. It has a total install base of 21.3 percent, which is marginally shy of Android Oreo’s market share. Android Lollipop, which is now ancient by every imaginable standard, is active on 17.9 percent of Android devices.

Android KitKat powers 7.6 percent devices while Jelly Bean can still be seen running on 3 percent of active devices. Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread are still seen on 0.3 percent and 0.2 percent of active devices. The numbers show that Android Oreo has raced to 20 percent active devices faster than Nougat and Android Pie might appear on the distribution numbers next month.
