Leading app analytics provider App Annie has announced that it is now tracking Android app usage in China, the world’s biggest smartphone market. Android apps from over 100 app stores (because China has blocked Google Play Store) are being monitored. App Annie will offer real-time usage behavior either through its own set of tools or from external data supplied by partners, according to reports. This is critical for the global app market considering China sets trends in mobile app usage. Also Read - Indians spent about 5.5 billion hours on TikTok in 2019

App Annie tracks more than 90 percent of the top-100 app publishers in the world, and thus, most of the consumer behavior across geographies is captured. China being the censored market that it is had been missing until now when it came to Android usage. “It s crucial to provide an accurate picture to app publishers and brand (marketers) of what s happening in China but also what s happening globally in terms of app usage,”Bertrand Schmitt, chief executive and co-founder of App Annie, stated. The company’s newly built China Android monitoring service will track usage metrics on nearly 5,000 top apps. It will offer insights on MAUs, DAUs, most-downloaded and used apps, cross-app usage, and so on. Both app publishers as well as brand marketers in China will benefit from App Annie’s data, and can realign their customer targeting and spends.

In 2016, China accounted for over 60 percent of the world’s spends on mobile apps. It included e-commerce, app store downloads, and in-app advertising. Mobile games were particularly popular accounting for 10 percent of all apps on Android phones. Some of the world’s leading apps count Chinese users as their core audience. One of them is WeChat, a WhatsApp equivalent, that is the third-most used app in the world. ALSO READ: Global app economy projected to reach $6.3 trillion by 2021: App Annie

“Something particularly interesting we have seen is that consumers in China on average have 40+ apps on their devices vs 35 on average in US,” Danielle Levitas, SVP – Research, App Annie reportedly said. “Given the dominance of WeChat and the fact that this one app allows its users to do so many things order food, pay someone, social or communication, get a ride, etc it seems surprising that users in this country use more apps on average than those in US or many Western countries,” she added.
