It s that time of the year when Apple is all set to unveil its 2016 iPhone duo. While we re still 24 hours away from the big announcement, one of the biggest mysteries around the new iPhones is now clear. For more than past six months, we ve been hearing about the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. However, last month we came across leaked retail boxes and pamphlets that pointed to Apple naming its 2016 flagship smartphones as iPhone 6 SE and iPhone 6s SE. As the new iPhones are expected to bring minor design tweaks, Apple was expected to reserve the 7 branding for next year s models. However, Apple has accidentally let the cat out of the bag a day early. No, Apple is not going with the SE branding, and will be releasing the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus as planned. The slip up happened earlier today, and was spotted by a Reddit user Jaspergreenham while browsing through the accessories page on Apple s Hong Kong website. While Apple was quick enough to remove the mention, the user did grab a screenshot which reveals the device models iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
From what we know so far, the new iPhones will come with improved design — and the ugly antenna bands at the back are likely to be moved along the top and bottom edges. Two new colors — dark black and piano black with glossy finish, along with the existing silver, gold and rose gold are also expected. The screen size and resolution too is expected to be the same as existing models.
Both iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are likely to be powered by Apple s A10 chipset (TSMC made). While the iPhone 7 is expected to come with 2GB of RAM, the Plus variant could sport 3GB of RAM. The on board storage option could start with 32GB (up from 16GB on iPhone 6s/iPhone 6s Plus) and go all the way up to 128GB and 256GB. The cameras on the new iPhones are also expected to get major upgrades. The iPhone 7 could sport 12-megapixel rear camera (aperture f/1.9) with OIS support, whereas the iPhone 7 could sport dual camera support 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and 12-megapixel telephoto lens. Both cameras would work together to create zoom-like functionality, or and also add DSLR-like blur (bokeh) effects.
The new iPhones are also expected to come with improved water and dust resistance capabilities. Apple could also drop support for decade old 3.5mm connector and could rely on Lightning port or Bluetooth for Audio. Rumors also suggest that the earpiece would double as a stereo speaker when listening to music or watching videos. The Touch ID fingerprint scanner could be a capacitive one, instead the usual clickable button. Lastly, both iPhones are also expected to come with larger batteries compared to their predecessors.
Apple is also expected to launch the new Apple Watch 2 and refreshed Apple Watch (first generation) models at its event tomorrow. Other details about price and availability are scarce at the moment. However, we will come to know exactly what Apple has in store for its customers tomorrow, when it unveils the new smartphones. The keynote begins at tomorrow at 10:30PM IST and we will bring you all the latest updates from the event. Till then, stay tuned.
