Apple has now completed the acquisition of Shazam music recognition app on Monday. The Cupertino company had acquired Shazam last year in December for around $400 million. Shazam is a popular music recognition app that is available across Android, Windows and iOS platforms. The company will soon make Shazam’s experience ad-free for all users.

Apple and Shazam have a long history together. Shazam was one of the first apps available when we launched the App Store and has become a favorite app for music fans everywhere,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Music. “With a shared love of music and innovation, we are thrilled to bring our teams together to provide users even more great ways to discover, experience and enjoy music.”

Shazam for iPhone came in July 2008. The app has so far has been downloaded over 1 billion times, and users identify songs using the Shazam app over 20 million times each day, noted Apple in its acquisition announcement on Monday. Now with this acquisition, Apple can get rid of the commission it pays to the service when users land on iTunes Store to purchase the content discovered on the platform.

It’ll also be benefited from Shazam’s augmented reality platform, which is also Apple’s core focus now. Shazam’s AR platform was launched in 2015. It allows users to scan magazines, books, posters, advertisements and launch 3D animations, product visualizations and even 360-degree videos. Apple could integrate Shazam’s AR tech with its own ARKit platform or create a Google Lens rival that works with Siri.
