Apple and TRAI could come to an agreement over allowing access to third-party DND apps: Report

Apple has been fearful of risking users' privacy, hence the tussle between the company and TRAI spiked in last one year.

Apple and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have had struggle over iPhone not allowing access to messages and calls for third-party apps, although with iOS 12, iPhone users can look forward to reporting spam calls and messages but it still doesn’t allow third-party do-not-disturb (DND) apps to have permissions of iPhone messages and call logs.

In 2017, TRAI had demanded Apple to report targeted spam messages and calls after the launch of an in-house DND app launched by telecom regulator. The tussle between the regulator and Apple Inc. spiked after Google allowing access to TRAI’s DND app on Android smartphones.

While Apple did allow third-party DND apps to work on iPhones, what it is not agreeing to is giving access to calls and message log. According to TOI report, Apple says that it understands TRAI’s concern in blocking spam, but the latest iOS 12 provides users ways to report such spam calls and messages, which is a more focused way of giving control in users’ hands and ensures privacy.

Essentially, Apple feels that giving calls and messages access to such DND apps would mean a violation of its user privacy norms.

In Apple iOS 12, iPhone users now have this features to report spam calls and messages through the call records, or messaging logs. If a user wants to mark a number or SMS as spam/junk, then only a pop-up will highlight in DND apps through which it could either be blocked or could be reported to authorities.

The report notes that Apple and TRAI have been in touch over the issue and the matter in nearing resolution. As of now, there is no clarity as to how Apple will incorporate TRAI’s request, because if that happens, it’ll mean a comprehensive global update for all iPhones in the world and not just India. Also, if that eventually gets done, then iPhone users will also be able to use TrueCaller just the way it works on Android in real-time.
