Apple’s App Store for iOS devices have logged over 15 billion app downloads, the company said today in a statement. The Store has over 425,000 apps, with over 100,000 of them created specifically for the iPad, making it the largest app repository for any single smartphone and tablet operating system. Apple has not mentioned what proportion of these downloads were paid apps but the company has so far paid developers over $2.5 billion. Apple shares 70 per cent of the revenue with developers while pocketing the rest.
“In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Thank you to all of our amazing developers who have filled it with over 425,000 of the coolest apps and to our over 200 million iOS users for surpassing 15 billion downloads.”
