Apple iCloud feat

Apple confirms that it uses Google’s public cloud to store iCloud data of its customers. The Cupertino-based iPhone maker updated a file on its website last month to reveal use of Google’s cloud services.

Apple periodically publishes new version of a PDF file called the iOS Security Guide. For years, the document has revealed that Apple is relying on remote cloud storage service from Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft’s Azure for its iCloud service. In the latest version updated last month, the reference to Microsoft Azure is gone and Google Cloud Platform has taken its place.

The last update to the iOS Security Guide came in March last year. Amazon and Microsoft are the two major cloud service providers, but Google has started pushing its Cloud Platform in the past year and has acquired big customers. The details regarding Google winning iCloud support came first in 2016 but Apple never offered a formal confirmation regarding the deal.

The latest update from Apple doesn’t indicate whether it is using any Google cloud services other than core storage of objects like photos and videos. The document also does not reveal when Apple switched from Microsoft’s Azure to Google Cloud Platform to store iCloud data.

Google recently revealed that its public cloud and its G Suite line of cloud-based apps contribute $1 billion in revenue per quarter. In the fourth quarter, the revenue of market leader Amazon Web Services stood at $5.11 billion. The acquisition of Apple’s iCloud services will be a great addition to Google’s cloud revenue.

The other notable technology companies relying on Google Cloud Platform include Kroger, PayPal, Snap and Spotify.
