It has previously been reported that in 2017, Apple will be launching three new smartphones, two of which will feature an LCD display and one would sport an OLED display. Aligning with this information, new details from a report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities reveals that the 4.7-inch 2017 model, in particular, could become a new mid-range or even low-end model for Apple, which he suspects could be called the iPhone 7s, reports Apple Insider. According to Kuo, the purported iPhone 7s, if tagged at a mid-range segment, may account for between 30 and 35 percent of new-model iPhone shipments in fiscal year 2017. He predicts that most sales will go to the OLED-featuring iPhone 8, accounting for between 50 and 55 percent of shipments of new models next year. Essentially Kuo feels positively about Apple s next year s lineup, predicting shipments between 90 million and 110 million, up from an estimate of 75 million in 2016. From what Kuo has said earlier, there will be a 5.5-inch variant of the iPhone 8, which will come with an OLED display and a dual-camera setup. He also said that there will also be a 5-inch variant with LCD display with a dual-camera setup. As for the 4.7-inch variant, which even earlier he predicted as the lowest variant, is said to come with an LCD display but without dual-cameras. Additionally, other rumors suggest that, both rear cameras on the iPhone 8 will come with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and have a redesigned telephoto lens. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the new upgrade will help the next generation iPhones deliver much better quality photos. We believe Apple will add OIS function to the telephoto CCM in order to enhance the selling points of next year s new iPhone. We think photo quality and optical zoom range may both improve as a result. We expect the telephoto lens will be redesigned to support OIS in the telephoto CCM, with challenges likely coming from: (1) the need to increase the image circle of the telephoto lens, which will lead to longer calibration time and a more complex assembly processes; and (2) a redesign of the telephoto lens, as an increased image circle will result in degraded photo quality around the corners, Macrumors quoted the analyst as saying.
It may be recalled that the same analyst had predicted that the iPhone 8 would come with an all-glass design like the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s. Other rumored features of the iPhone 8 include wireless charging facility, something which was initially expected on the iPhone 7. The wireless technology on the iPhone 8 is said to charge the smartphone within a distance of 15 feet. ALSO READ: Here s why only one Apple iPhone 8 variant will have OLED display
Adding to the rumors about the iPhone 8 s display, it is also expected to ditch the physical Home button and feature a 3D fingerprint scanner. This report is in lines with the patent Apple was granted recently under the title Capacitive fingerprint sensor including an electrostatic lens . This report goes in line with the OLED display on the iPhone 8, as the fingerprint scanner would be embedded below the display. In the current lot, only Xiaomi s Mi 5s features Qualcomm s Sense ID ultrasonic fingerprint sensor which is placed below the front glass of the smartphone.
