Apple is all set to take the wraps off the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus at its special event later today. The new iPhones are likely come with improved internals such as faster processor, more RAM, bigger batteries, larger onboard storage and more. Among the many changes, Apple is also widely expected to ditch the 3.5mm audio port and use Lightning connector or Bluetooth instead. Apple is also rumored to be working on truly wireless headphones for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Now, details about the technology and working of these headphones, called AirPods have surfaced. According to a research note by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, obtained by AppleInsider, these wireless headphones are set to play a crucial role in eliminating the 3.5mm headphone jack from the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Kuo believes that wireless headphones could become a default option for several iPhone users. Apple is likely to address the growing wireless headphones market by offering the Apple-branded AirPods placed in high-end segment, and Beats-branded headphones in the mid-range segment. A couple of months ago, the AirPods-branding was leaked via Apple’s trademark filing. It is believed that it s a combination of Apple’s wireless streaming technology AirPlay, and the EarPods that come bundled with iOS devices. Apple will likely have its own-designed Bluetooth-like communication chip and launch own-brand Bluetooth headphones targeting the high-end market, with Beats positioned in the midrange market,” Kuo wrote. For low-power wireless communication that functions beyond headphones, Apple could use a proprietary Bluetooth-like chip. However, he did not mention anything about the pricing. Kuo also cited that wireless communications chip could be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, whereas Ivantec and Cheng Uei Precision could handle the final assembly of headphones. In the past couple of weeks, there had been rumors that Apple may bundle wireless headphones with high-end (256GB variants) of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. However, leaked packaging suggests that Apple is likely to bundle wireless EarPods with Lightning connector as well as Lightning connector to legacy 3.5mm headphone jack adapter.
