Apple’s Jony Ive, the chief design officer at the Cupertino-based iPhone maker, is one of the most important executives at the company after CEO Tim Cook. While his voice acts as the secret sauce for every Apple product, Ive is not known for giving public interviews. Now, in an interview with watch magazine Hodinkee, Jony Ive talks about origins of the Apple Watch and his best friend in the industry.
The interview published in the second volume of Hodinkee magazine, Ive calls legendary designer Marc Newson as his best friend. He told Benjamin Clymer, the founder of Hodinkee, that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs didn’t usually wear a watch and didn’t really talk about timepieces in general.
Ive and his industrial design group was responsible for the design of Apple Watch. Ive says the team reached out to experts to help inform the design of the Apple Watch, including horologists, curators at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, UK and an astrophysicist. Ive jokingly says that though Apple’s laptop is called MacBook, the company did not talk to librarians.
“You know, we call this (pointing at my MacBook Pro), a MacBook, but you won’t learn more about this by understanding the nature of a physical book – so we didn’t talk to librarians. With the watch, we did,” Business Insider quotes Ive from the magazine.
Apple Watch is the first product conceived under the leadership of CEO Tim Cook and is the first product developed in the post-Jobs era. “The first discussion took place in early 2012, a few months after Steve’s passing. It caused us to take time, pausing to think about where we wanted to go, what trajectory we were on as a company, and what motivated us,” Ive said.
“At that point in the journey, we were all routinely carrying around incredibly powerful products, in terms of their technical ability, in our pockets. And it seemed, I think, that an obvious continuation of this path that we’ve been on for so many years was to make technology more personal and more accessible,” he added.
Ive also confirms that Apple brought in Marc Newson for the project when the company hired him as consultant in 2014. “You know that’s been this way for years and years, and he’s somebody who became part of our group with a very particular expertise and set of experiences,” Ive said calling Newson his best friend.

Ive also told Clymer that his first watch was an Omega Speedmaster and he most admires the Patek Phillippe Nautilus. It is interesting that both these watches are mechanical and are considered to be the highest standard in the world of horology.
Jony Ive is considered to be one of the most prominent industrial designers right now. His design elements have been the key to success of various Apple products including iPod, iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple Watch. Last year, he returned to a managerial role after two years and is expected to be laying down the road-map for future design of iPhone and other Apple products.
