Apple reportedly working on new family of devices codenamed ‘Star’

There are speculations that Apple’s Star project could be a hybrid computer with LTE capabilities.

Apple reportedly has a project codenamed Star under development. According to 9ToMac, the device being developed is a hybrid computer with LTE capabilities. As per the report, the project is currently at the prototype stage. Initial prototypes are said to have been manufactured by Pegatron, and have reached Cupertino for testing.

This alleged hybrid computer is believed to be powered by ARM processors, and are likely to come with 4G LTE support with a dedicated SIM card slot, on-board GPS, and water resistance. The report further mentions that the device will boast touch capabilities as well as the ability to connect to external keyboards. Think of the many 2-in-1 Windows PCs available today.

It will be interesting to see what operating system this hybrid would run since the macOS currently supports only the x86 processor family. Lately we have come across reports claiming that Apple is working towards bringing the Mac ecosystem closer to iOS. Could this device also be the first to run a hybrid macOS and iOS operating system? Unfortunately, the report says we will have to wait till 2020 for the device to ship.

The move to ARM-based device is a significant step for Apple, which has long relied on Intel for chipsets. This however falls in line with recent reports stating that Apple was making moves to reduce this reliance by potentially also using in-house chipsets.

In the meanwhile, Apple is gearing up to host is annual developer conference (WWDC 2018) at the start of next month. During the keynote, CEO Tim Cook and co. are expected to talk about new versions of their operating systems, a revamped Mac App Store, and possibly the long-rumored Apple iPhone SE 2.
