Apple, Google reroute employee shuttle buses in San Francisco after reports of multiple attacks

Since last week, at least five of Apple’s shuttles and one of Google’s were attacked, with what is suspected to either be pellet guns or rocks.

If you can recall, about four years ago, some Google shuttle buses, that took its employees back and fro from work, were attacked as a way of protesting the tech-company-driven gentrification taking place around San Francisco. According to reports, that’s happening again, and not just with Google, but with Apple shuttles as well.

Consequently, Apple and Google have informed their employees who use the service that their commute is about to get 45 minutes longer as they will now be taking alternate routes to avoid that highway were reports of attacks were noted.

As per a Fortune report, ‘at least five’ of the Apple shuttles’ windows have been smashed while the buses were still in transit. Reportedly, it is suspected that someone is shooting out the windows using pellet guns, or perhaps throwing rocks. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as of now. A Google bus was also attacked on the same highway last week.

The buses were not marked with the logos of the companies that chartered them. However, according to a Guardian report, the companies are identifiable by the colors of the buses: white for Google, silver for Apple and blue for Facebook. “If someone was targeting the buses, I’m sure they are going to find them anywhere they go. It’s not like they are hidden,” the report quoted Montiel as saying.

The buses are symbolic of big tech companies’ program of starving public spending that benefits everyone and replacing it with private services that benefit only them. These companies have been the locus of several controversies over the years, including a long-simmering grievance over the buses’ use of city-bus infrastructure, blocking curbs and slowing public transit.

In 2014, Google had to hire private security guards to protect its buses and their riders while they loaded and unloaded in San Francisco.
