If there were any doubts whether Apple was working on a smartwatch, put them all to rest. Apple was today granted a patent for the iTime, which clearly is a smartwatch, which Apple has been rumored to launch since last year as the iWatch. The patent not only shows what the iWatch could look like but also details most of the functionalities the wearable would have, which has been detailed by Apple Insider that first spotted the application.

The iTime can connect to various devices like iPhones, iPads and laptops and has sensors embedded in the straps. The application has reference to the iPod nano, which was hacked into a wearable watch by many users. In such a scenario, the patent talks about straps that could include accelerometer, GPS, wireless communication and other modules. The iTime will be able to connect and share information with other devices like an iPhone either automatically or when requested by the user.

Connected devices like an iPhone will be able to send notifications to the watch and users can either interact with the notification on the iPhone or directly from the watch itself. The watch will also be able to alert the user if the connected iPhone is left behind and the user goes beyond a preset distance.

In one scenario, users won’t require any additional device and the iTime would be able to work on its own.

The patent also describes how users will be able to interact with the iTime by using gestures, taps and movements of the are and wrist to get things done.

Apple is reportedly planning to launch three variants of the iWatch – one with a 1.6-inch display and two with a 1.8-inch display. Originally planned for an October launch, the iWatch launch could be delayed till early next year, if rumors from Apple’s supply chain are to be believed. A recent report also suggested that the iWatch could have as many as 10 sensors.

There have been multiple reports about the launch time frame for the iWatch but it remains to be seen if and when Apple launches it. What is certain however is that Apple is working on a smartwatch.

Apple had recently hired a senior sales executive from Tag Heuer, reportedly for the iWatch and was also courting pro athletes to test its functionality.
