At its ‘Gather Round’ event today, Apple confirmed that the update will start rolling out to all compatible iPhones and iPads starting September 17. The company also announced that it will soon ship its 2 billionth iOS-based device, making it one of the most widely used operating systems.

Apple iOS 12 will of course come pre-installed on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR at the time of launch. The update will also roll out to older models like the iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE and iPhone 5s. It will also be pushed out to first and second generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, 10.5-inch iPad Pro, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, 5th and 6th generation iPad, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 2. The sixth generation iPod touch will also get the update on September 17.

iOS 12 new features

With iOS 12, Apple is bringing a tonne of new features, but the focus remains around performance improvements. Apple says iOS 12 users will see 30 percent faster overall response, and up to 40 percent quicker launch time for applications. To recall, Apple had originally announced iOS 12 back at WWDC, and the operating system has been available in the form of both developer preview and public preview for sometime now. Apple also touts that the keyboard appears 50 percent faster on iOS 12 while the camera opens up to 70 percent faster.

One of the main new features with iOS 12 is ARKit 2.0, which brings shared experiences. Apple demoed a new application called Measure, which uses ARKit to measure things just using the iPhone. At the event today, developers showcased how ARKit 2.0 can be used to play games by simply pointing your phones at one another.

Siri is also getting major facelift with the next version of Apple’s mobile operating system. With iOS 12, Apple is introducing a new feature called Siri Shortcuts, which allows any application to deeply expose quick actions to Siri. With Shortcuts, Apple iOS 12 users can initiate multiple actions with a single voice command. It is essentially Routines feature found on Alexa and Google Assistant on smart speakers like Echo and Google Home respectively.
