Apple has an event scheduled for tonight where it is expected to unveil the successor of the iPad Air, which it launched last year. As always, the rumor mills have provided us with several details about the forthcoming tablet. When iPad Air was launched last year, it had noticeable design changes. This year too, the device is expected to exhibit several changes, including a thinner design. Among some of the biggest changes, the home button on the tablet is getting the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, as confirmed by a user manual accidentally leaked by Apple last night.
Leaked photos also suggest that in order to keep the iPad really thin, Apple has done away with the mute/screen-rotation button. Another rumor also suggests that much like the iPhones, the iPad Air 2 will also come in gold color option.
iPad Air 2 specifications
The iPad Air 2 is expected to boast several hardware improvements. Last year s iPad Air brought the 64-bit A7 processor to the table, but that was the only significant boost. While earlier rumors suggested that the new tablet will be powered by an A8 processor that was introduced on the new iPhone 6, a set of recently leaked photos suggest otherwise.
Leaked photos of internal components suggest that the tablet could include a more powerful A8X processor. Additionally, the RAM is also getting a bump from 1GB to 2GB. The increase in power is essential, with the new iPad expected to include a split-screen feature, which will allow users to run multiple apps simultaneously.
As for display, while the size of the display will remain the same, reports suggest that it will be 30-40 percent brighter than before.
iPad Air 2 new features
With the inclusion of Touch ID, the new iPad Air 2 will supposedly get the Apple Pay mobile payment feature. But does giving an iPad mobile payment option sound practical? Not so much. A tablet isn t nearly as portable as a phone. However, an iPad laced with NFC chip still makes a lot of sense, and there has been fair amount of rumors pointing to that. There is also a rumor that Apple may launch a Smart Cover Keyboard very similar to the Microsoft Surface keyboard.
iPad Air 2 Pricing and Availability
While Apple is expected to unveil the iPad Air 2 tonight, reports suggest it will go on sale on October 24. As for pricing, the entry-level iPad Air 2 is expected to cost around $499.
