Apple it seems is planning on discontinuing the iPad mini lineup, and instead focus its efforts on the oft rumored iPad Pro. This piece of information comes from a rather hard-to-believe report from Taiwanese publication Economic Daily News. According to the publication, Apple believes that the launch of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus would eat into the iPad mini s sales. Apple s new iPhones are doing really well, and have already broken previous sales records. While Apple hasn t broken down the numbers, it is widely believed that the bigger iPhone 6 Plus is more in demand among buyers. The iPads, on the other hand, aren t having that good a time as Apple recently announced that tablet sales declined to 12.3 million from 14.1 million the prior year. While it is not uncommon for Apple to discontinue an older device on the eve of a new device s launch, something about Apple discontinuing the iPad mini because of the iPad Pro doesn t sound right. The two tablets will clearly focus on completely different audience. The former not only offers a full-sized iPad s performance in a compact package, it is also not very heavy on one s pockets.
The iPad Pro, in comparison, is rumored to flaunt a 12.2-inch display, iPhone-like thinness, A8X processor, 2GB of RAM, and may run on an integrated version of iOS and OS X. If these rumors are anything to go by, the forthcoming iPad Pro won t be cheap.
As with such speculative reports, we would advise you to take it with the proverbial pinch of salt.
