We are still a month away from Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and the rumor mill has started bubbling with its set of speculations and leaks. While Apple will not release the highly anticipated anniversary edition iPhone at the upcoming conference in June, it is surely set to refresh its tablet lineup along with announcing updates to its iOS and Mac software.
According to the latest report coming from Donklephant, Apple will announce the second iteration of its iPad Pro and three other iPad devices. The new releases will include 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2, new iPad models in 10.5-inch and 10-inch display sizes, and a 9.7-inch iPad Mini 5. Interestingly, the last update to the iPad Mini model (the iPad Mini 4) was announced back in 2015 and if rumors are to be believed, not only will Apple finally announce the long-due upgrade to the small tablet but also re-brand it and call it simply as the ‘iPad Mini’. This falls in line with the company’s recent decision of moving away from the ‘Air’ branding.
Recently, Apple launched a new 9.7-inch iPad (2017), replacing the iPad Air 2. The current iPad lineup includes — 12.9-inch iPad Pro, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, 9.7-inch iPad and iPad Mini 4. For the new iPad Pro 2, Apple is expected to use the A10X chipset along with the latest iOS 11. However, the refreshed iPad models and rest of the mini devices are likely to run the current version A9X chipset.
If the rumors are to be believed, the 10.5-inch iPad is expected to be the highlight of the launch event. It is expected that this particular model will boast a bezel-less display and is said to be the first iOS device to come without a physical home button as the Touch ID sensor will be placed below the display. The iPad Pro 2, on the other hand, is speculated to have thinner bezels on its 10.5-inch True Tone display. It is expected to further include 12-megapixel iSight camera with True Tone Flash. While the 10.5-inch model is likely to run the newer A10X chipset, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro 2 could run the current A9X chipset. Past reports also indicate that the new iPad Pro 2 will support a new magnetic Apple Pencil and one of the company’s patents reveal that there will also be a holder attached to the tablet to keeping the stylus in place. It is worth mentioning that this year Apple’s iconic iPhone turns 10 and as part of commemorating the occasion, the company is expected to announce some brand new design changes to its anticipated smartphone. There is, however, no clear indication if the celebrations will trickle to other products including the iPad lineup.
