Apple iPad Pro with thinner bezels and no Touch ID hinted at by iOS 12 developer beta

It's almost time to say goodbye to the Touch ID/Home button

Apple is believed to be working on an update for the iPad Pro that could debut alongside the new iPhone models in September. The rumors suggest that the new version of iPad will have no home button and use Face ID, like the iPhone X for user authentication.

Now, the first real confirmation about such a design language has been found in the source code for iOS 12 developer beta 5. The information has been found as part of the battery usage UI, and it shows an iPad with no physical home button and thinner bezels than its predecessor. The leak is almost identical to the one seen last year where icon for the upcoming iPhone X with a notched display was found buried inside the software for Apple HomePod.

The new iPad glyph appearing in iOS 12 developer beta 5 confirms the rumors but has one notably missing element notch. The icon seems to confirm that the 2018 iPad Pro models will come without a notch unlike the iPhone models set to launch later this year. The comparison between the regular iPad glyph and the new iPad glyph posted by 9to5Mac clearly depicts the change set to be introduced this year.

It is now clear that Apple will be retiring the Touch ID, which also acts as home button, from all of its products with the launch of new iPad Pro. The name of the asset also specifies “iPad” and there is no references in the system for this device just. The reference further clarifies that we are looking at an unannounced product here, which could debut as 2018 iPad Pro later this fall.

The iOS code also has a reference to the accessibility setting that confirms the existence of Face ID. It was previously reported that Face ID will only work in portrait mode on the iPad. However, there are new evidence which confirm that Apple is preparing Face ID to work in landscape orientation as well. Apple bringing Face ID to the iPad Pro shows its confidence in 3D facial recognition as the next major method for biometric authentication. This should also make iPads smaller in dimension without any compromise on screen real-estate.
