Another eventful day, and week in the world of technology draws to a close. From latest predictions on the future Apple iPhone features to the India launch of what is said to be Oppo’s first edge-to-edge smartphone, plenty of interesting stories topped through the day. Here’s a quick roundup of all the top stories of the day.
Apple’s newest iPhone X, which is yet to hit global markets, has had its own share of bouquets and brickbats. Whether people find the Face ID feature useful or a threat to privacy, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that all iPhone models next year are set to include the biometric recognition system that uses facial scanning technique. The 3D scanning feature, as Kuo notes, will give future iPhone models an edge over Android smartphones.
Another major happening of the day was the latest figures of Apple iOS installation base. As per analytics company Mixpanel, the latest iOS 11 was already installed on 48.6 percent of devices, exceeding iOS 10’s install base of 45.4 percent. However, BGR India noticed that while the latest iteration witnessed a good share in installations a day before, there was a dramatic drop in the adoption rate, which had fallen down to 42.7 percent, with iOS 10 again taking the lead 46.5 percent install base. This can be attributed to the range of performance and battery-related issues people are facing. Meanwhile, Apple rolled out the iOS 11.0.3 yesterday. Talking about smartphones, telecom operators Vodafone and Idea Cellular are reportedly working on a series of low-cost 4G phones to lure customers. Thanks to the commercial launch of Reliance Jio 4G services last year and the launch of JioPhone this year, incumbent operators are not only mulling consolidation, but also looking at ways to beat the juggernaut in its game by heading towards manufacturing devices. Vodafone and Idea have reportedly approached domestic device makers Lava and Karbonn to build affordable phones. The news follows the scheme launched by Airtel and Karbonn about an ‘effectively priced‘ Rs 1,399 4G smartphone.
