Apple’s product launch events have always drawn the attention of the entire technology industry, but the hype this year seems to be at an all-time high. Although the date hasn’t been officially announced yet, the Cupertino-based technology company is expected to unveil its 2018 line-up of smartphones (as well as other devices, including smartwatches and laptops) sometime in September.
Like every year, majority of the excitement is around Apple’s upcoming iPhones. In the previous months, countless leaks and rumours have surfaced online, giving us a fair idea of what to expect from the company.
As we count down to Apple’s September event, here’s everything we know about the 2018 line-up of iPhones so far.
Three iPhones: Two premium and one ‘affordable’
Thanks to a steady stream of leaks, rumours, and even videos, we already know that Apple is expected to launch three new iPhones this year. These will come in three screen sizes – 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.5-inch. The 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch models, expected to be called iPhone X (2018) and iPhone X Plus respectively, will both have OLED panels. On the other hand, the 6.1-inch version will have an LCD panel and called iPhone 9.
Hardware and software
It’s worth mentioning that all three upcoming iPhones will have the infamous notch, along with bezel-less displays. This essentially means that none of the 2018 iPhones will have Touch ID, and the devices will instead rely on Face ID.
A video recently uploaded by YouTuber Michael Kukielka (DetroitBORG) showcased the dummies of the three iPhones, which have been claimed to be ‘fairly accurate’. These clearly show that the smallest and largest variants have a dual-camera system at the back, whereas the middle ‘affordable’ model features a single rear camera. The video even shows all three dummies having glass backs, which means they all could feature wireless charging.
Each year, Apple debuts a new chipset with its iPhones, and 2018 likely won’t be any different. This year’s iPhones are expected to be powered by Apple’s upcoming A12 (Bionic) SoC, which will feature advanced wireless features and faster LTE connectivity. The top-of-the-line iPhone X (Plus) could come with up to 4GB of RAM. It’s even been rumoured that the new iPhones will have Apple Pencil support and up to 512GB of internal storage.
Needless to say, all three iPhones will come with iOS 12 out-of-the-box.
Launch, pre-order, and delivery timeline
So far, Apple hasn’t announced an official date for the launch of the new iPhones. However, a recent report claimed that the smartphones may be unveiled on September 12. It further mentions that pre-orders for the three iPhones will begin on September 14, with deliveries commencing from September 21.
