Apple iPhone 6 to reportedly boast 1,704x960 pixels Retina Display

While it is all but confirmed that Apple will be launching two variants of the iPhone 6 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch, we have yet to come across any detail about the display. Until now that is. 9To5Mac s Mark Gurman, who has a solid record of leaking Apple-related information, claims that Apple is testing a 1704×960 pixels display for the iPhone 6.

Gurman claims that similar to the 2X bump in the resolution when Apple launched the iPhone 4, this time around the company is reportedly looking at a 3X bump. He explains that the base resolution on the current iPhones is 568×320 pixels, and the sharpness is achieved by cramming in twice as many pixels in each direction. With the iPhone 6, Apple will be cramming in thrice as many pixels in each direction.

The display on the iPhone 6 will be taller as well as slightly wider than the iPhone 5S, but will stick to the 16:9 aspect ratio. By tripling the pixel count, Apple will also achieve its best ever pixel density of 416ppi on the 4.7-inch variant and 356ppi on the 5.5-inch variant. With more space available for use, developers will be able to take advantage by adding additional interface elements or displaying more content in Maps and Safari, for example.

Apple is also said to be developing a new A8 SoC for the next-generation iPhones that not only adds more speed but also significantly improve efficiency to boost the device s battery life.

Apple is expected to unveil the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 in September and the 5.5-inch variant towards the end of the year. But a recent report claims that the Cupertino-based company could surprise us all by launching the smaller variant in August and the larger variant towards the end of September.
