There have been quite a few contradicting reports regarding Apple’s use of sapphire display on the forthcoming iPhone 6. World Street Journal now claims that Apple is indeed considering using sapphire glass on the iPhone 6, but the cost of manufacturing will limit it to more expensive models.

The publication cites ‘sources familiar with the matter’ who claim that Apple will have a limited edition iPhone 6 model boasting sapphire glass display. It will be available in both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch sizes and will be more expensive than standard variants. One of the major reasons for being expensive is the cost of manufacturing — with a sapphire iPhone display costing around $16, while a Corning Gorilla Glass display costs only $3.

If true, it would be a significant change in tradition, as the iPhones have only ever been differentiated by their color and internal storage. It will also be the first time that Apple will introduce two new iPhones with different display sizes. Apple already uses sapphire glass to protect the TouchID sensor on the home button, and the camera lens at the back.

The publication also hints that the rumored Apple iWatch too is likely to boast a sapphire display. We will however advice you to take this with a pinch of salt, considering the number of qualifiers being used in the story. The author says that the plans would only take place if Apple “can get enough of the material.” There is also the fact that there is hardly any time left with Apple set to unveil the iPhone 6 at an event reportedly scheduled on September 9.
