Apple iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S5: Specifications and features compared

Apple unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the iPhone 6 earlier this week. The phone is slimmer, larger, and brings boatload of features. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, it is the best smartphone out there but is it really that great? Let s put it head to head with Samsung s flagship smartphone Galaxy S5, and see how do they compare. The iPhone 6 finally boasts an impressive 4.7-inch display with 750×1334 pixels screen resolution. While it s larger than iPhone 5S and all the other previous generation iPhones, Samsung has been making smartphones with larger display for a long time now. The Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a 5.1-inch screen, and also its resolution is set to 1080×1920 pixels (full HD), easily giving it an edge over Apple s offering.

Processor and RAM are easily two of the most selling points a user checks while purchasing a phone. And both the flagship devices don t disappoint in this front. While the Samsung Galaxy flaunts Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, the iPhone 6 carries its latest homegrown processor A8 quad-core processor.

In terms of RAM, the Samsung Galaxy S5 equips 2GB of RAM, compared to iPhone 6 which only has 1GB of RAM. However, considering how Apple optimizes its hardware, we would call it a tie.

This is one place where Samsung Galaxy passes with flaring grades. The Galaxy S5 is available with 16GB of internal storage that can by expanded by an additional 128GB via a microSD card. The iPhone 6, on the other hand, being an Apple mobile device doesn’t fancy an external memory slot. But it does come in three storage options: 16GB, 64GB and for the first time, 128GB.

Much like HTC, Apple has instead of upping the megapixels count, which a lot of people are obsessed over, has only added more features to the 8-megapixel iSight Camera. The new camera, as the company says brings faster focusing, better tone mapping, improved noise reduction, 1080p HD video recording at 60 FPS, slo-mo video capture at 240 fps capabilities, among other features. The front facing 1.2-megapixel camera has also been improved without changing the megapixel count.

As far as numbers are concerned, Galaxy S5 s camera beats iPhone 6 s by miles. The handset comes with 16-megapixel rear camera with dual shot feature and HDR capability. Even its 2MP front facing camera is better than iPhone 6 s, at least on paper.

Operating System

One of the biggest reasons why you would pick either of the handsets revolves around the software it is running. While the Galaxy S5 is running on Android s latest stable version KitKat (and will eventually get updated to Android L), the iPhone 6 runs on iOS. Both are top class operating systems with their own exclusive offerings.

The iOS 8 brings several health and fitness features, in addition to improved notification center, widgets, support for third-party keyboard apps, text predicting feature QuickType, App Previews and a gamut of other features.

Android KitKat and Android L also bring a lot of interesting features to the table. The chief among them include improved battery life and a massive visual overhaul (thanks to Material Design).

The Galaxy S5 comes with a fingerprint scanner to make you device more protected. Galaxy S5 is also dust and waterproof. In addition, it also comes with a heart rate monitor. The iPhone 6 also comes with a fingerprint sensor in addition to wireless mobile payments options.

As for pricing, the iPhone 6 is priced at $649 for the 16GB variant, and will be launched in India on October 17. The Galaxy S5 LTE (Qualcomm Snapdragon variant) is already available in India for Rs 45,290 from Samsung India’s eStore.
