While launching the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus earlier this September, Apple CEO Tim Cook also unveiled an iPhone upgrade program where users could buy the new iPhones for $34 a month and upgrade to the latest iPhone every year. The plan is only available in the US but one of Apple’s distributors in India is offering an upgrade plan for India that could push iPhone users to upgrade to the latest iPhone. This is a buyback scheme of sorts but unlike earlier where retailers had to take ownership of smartphones that were exchanged for the new iPhone, this time Ingram Micro would take care of that aspect.
The scheme offers up to Rs 43,000 off if you bring in your old iPhone and trade it for the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. Ingram Micro has set price bands for older iPhones though the actual value will depend on the condition of the device. Here are the suggested prices at which Ingram Micro will take back the older iPhone:
iPhone 5s 16GB: Rs 15,000 – Rs 16,000 | iPhone 6 128GB: Rs 34,000 – Rs 37,000 |
iPhone 5s 32GB: Rs 18,000 – Rs 20,000 | iPhone 6 Plus 16GB: Rs 31,000 – Rs 34,000 |
iPhone 5s 64GB: Rs 19,000 – Rs 21,000 | iPhone 6 Plus 64GB: Rs 37,000 – Rs 40,000 |
iPhone 6 16GB: Rs 27,000 – Rs 29,000 | iPhone 6 Plus 128 GB: Rs 40,000 – Rs 43,000 |
iPhone 6 64GB: Rs 32,000 – Rs 35,000 |
This year Apple has been called out for steep prices for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in India, which start from Rs 62,000 for the iPhone 6s 16GB and goes up to Rs 92,000 for the iPhone 6s Plus 128GB. At the moment, India is the most expensive country to buy the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. Ingram Micro hopes that this upgrade scheme would help existing iPhone users to upgrade to the latest iPhone. However, we are not sure how widely the program has been rolled out. Some reports suggested that it was currently being tested in South India.
