Hit the brakes! Apple s next generation iPhones, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, are finally here. Prices of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus start from Rs 60,000, and will be going on sale in India starting October 7. The smartphones will be available in the US starting September 16 with price starting at $649 (Rs 43,000 approximately). The latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus follow similar design language of the iPhone 6s series, but come with subtle changes along with major under the hood upgrades. In terms of design, the noticeable change is removal of the antenna bands from the back panel, giving the smartphones a neater look. Also, the company has gotten rid of 3.5mm audio jack to favor Lightning port for audio. The company has introduced two new color variants, Black and Jet Black, which accompany the older Silver, Gold and Rose Gold variants. Apple has also revamped the audio features on the new iPhones. While the 3.5mm audio jack has been removed, the new iPhones come with dual stereo speakers. Apple says the new iPhones deliver twice the volume from the older iPhones, and come with a high dynamic range. Apple has also focused on wireless audio experience. The company has introduced AirPods, which are true wireless earphones, similar to Samsung s Gear Icon X. The AirPods come with Apple-designed W1 chip, custom made for the wireless audio experience. The Apple AirPods are compatible with Apple Watch and iPhone 7-series smartphones. Beats is also going to launch Solo 3 Wireless and Beats X audio devices, leveraging Apple s new wireless audio technology. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be bundled with an EarPod with Lightning Connector and a Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter. The accessories will also be sold separately, priced at Rs 2,500 and Rs 900 respectively. Apple has also introduced new wireless AirPods that will be going on sale in late October, priced at Rs 15,400.
As rumored earlier, the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come with water and dust resistant with IP67 certification. Another major change has been made to the home button. The home button is now Force sensitive, and works with a new taptic engine, which is said to deliver a smoother experience.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus specifications
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus both retain the same display resolution and size as the predecessor iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The Apple iPhone 7 comes with 4.7-inch Retina HD display whereas the iPhone 7 Plus has a 5.5-inch Retina HD display. Apple says the display has been made 25 percent brighter and offer a wider color gamut.
For performance, the latest iPhones rely on a new A10 Fusion processor, which is a 64-bit quad-core CPU. Apple claims the new chipset is about 40 percent faster than the A9 processor that power iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone Plus run iOS 10 out of the box. Apple has announced that the iOS 10 will start rolling out from September 13.
Apple has finally ditched the 16GB variant, and made 32GB model as the base variant. Also, the other two variants come with 128GB and 256GB onboard storage.
For photography, Apple has included Optical Image Stabilization on both iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models. Earlier, the OIS support was only available for the Plus variants. There s a new image signal processor that helps deliver better images. The two smartphones can take 4K videos at 30 fps. The iPhone 7 comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera with TrueTone Flash and f/1.8 aperture. The front camera on the iPhone 7 and iPhone Plus have been upgraded from 5-megapixel to 7-megapixel resolution.
The rear camera on the iPhone 7 Plus has received major upgrade. It come with a dual camera setup featuring two 12-megapixel lenses. The first one is a wide-angle lens while the second one is telephoto. The iPhone 7 Plus comes with Optical Zoom (up to 2x), a rarity for smartphone cameras. The dual camera setup helps deliver bokeh effect, giving DSLR-like depth. Users can get bokeh effect by tapping on portrait mode within the camera app. The bokeh feature will come part as a software update later this year.
Apple says the iPhone 7 delivers up to 2 hours longer battery life than iPhone 6s whereas the iPhone 7 Plus gives 1 hour longer battery life than iPhone 6s Plus.
