It’s widely rumored that Apple plans to ditch the 3.5mm audio jack on the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. While subsequent reports have talked about wireless headset and standard EarPods with a Lightning cable, a leaked video has surfaced online showing exactly what Apple may have in store. The video gives us our first look at a Lightning to 3.5mm adaptor, which actually makes more sense than earlier leaks. The adapter seen in the video includes a male Lightning connector and a 3.5mm input at the other end to connect standard headphones. The overall design, white color and the size of the adaptor does look like something Apple would design. Adding more weight to the video’s authenticity, the leakster claims to have got his hands on the adaptor at a Foxconn Apple supplier factory in Vietnam. As for the adaptor’s functionality, the leakster further claims that it is currently not supported on iOS 9, but is compatible with devices running on iOS 10 beta. Also in a scenario wherein a headset is attached to a 3.5mm audio jack and another using the Lightning adaptor, the audio output is via the earphones connected to the adaptor.
While it is too early to comment on the authenticity of this leak, it does look like the real deal. In terms of design, it does look something that has been designed by Apple, and the leakster also gives us a detailed look into the functionality and compatibility.
Based on what we have come across so far, Apple is believed to be unveiling the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus on September 6. Following that, the iPhones are expected to go up for preorders on September 9. As far as design is concerned, the upcoming iPhones are expected to look pretty much the same as last year’s smartphones. There will however be enough changes to keep buyers interested, including a slimmer design, relocated antenna lines, and it is also expected to get a new color variant called ‘space black’.
As is the norm, Apple will be making many improvements on the photography front, and leaked photos hint at a bigger camera lens on the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 Plus however will boast a dual-camera setup at the back, which has been confirmed via numerous leaked photos.
As for specifications, the iPhone 7 is expected to feature a new A10 processor, 2GB of RAM, while the iPhone 7 Plus variant will feature 3GB of RAM. Other new features expected are TouchID sensor with Force Touch technology, and waterproofing capabilities. There are also a few sketchy rumors claiming that Apple might launch a third variant, called iPhone 7 Pro.
