The phone belonged to a visitor from Canada who had lost the phone while kayaking. Since the phone fell into the sea, the owner had considered it lost. However, Cerys was able to get in touch with a relative of the owner who lived in the area, and the phone was then sent to its owner in Canada. Interestingly, the phone was in a protective case that protected it from the harsh conditions of being on the ocean floor for two days. While the Apple iPhone 7 is itself IP67 water resistant, the protective case is what saved the phone from damage in this case.

While a lot of phones do come with water resistance today, they are rated for a maximum of 30 minutes at relatively shallow depths, and being 30 feet underwater for two days is an unlikely scenario for survival of the phone. Nonetheless, this particular Apple iPhone has proven to be tougher than the rest, and it’s owner is particularly lucky to be reunited with their phone in this case.
