Apple iPhone 7 vs iPhone 6s: Here's what's new

From better cameras, to lack of 3.5mm audio port, improved cameras and double storage space, here’s everything that is new in the iPhone 7 compared to last year’s iPhone 6s.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus was a major departure in Apple’s portfolio, where it moved from smartphones with compact 4-inch display to 4.7-inch (HD) and 5.5-inch (full HD) displays. With the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, Apple introduced 3D Touch display, higher resolution front and rear cameras and more. Now, with the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple has slightly tweaked the design, upgraded under the hood hardware, including better cameras, more onboard storage along with water and dust resistance capabilities. The new iPhones will go in sale in India starting October 7, with prices starting Rs 60,000. Now, here’s everything that is different in the new iPhone 7 compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 6s.

Design: Instead of going for a massive overhaul, Apple has slightly tweaked the design of iPhone 7 compared the iPhone 6s. The new smartphone comes with same premium, lightweight aluminum body. The main changes come at the back panel, where the ugly antenna bands have now been moved on the top and bottom edge of the panel. This also offers the new iPhones with a clean and distraction-free look. Also, while the iPhone 6s camera module had a bump with steel ring around it, the iPhone 7 camera module much flatter, with tiny bit of bump still present.

Display: Both iPhone 7 and iPhone 6s Plus feature a 4.7-inch HD LED display running at a resolution of 1334×750 pixels, and pixel density of 326ppi. The display on the new iPhone 7 is 25 percent brighter than the iPhone 6s, and comes with new wide color gamut to deliver vibrant, cinema standard colors. 3D Touch feature from the iPhone 6s is also present here.

No 3.5mm audio port: Not many are going to love it, but Apple has ended the legacy of the age-old 3.5mm audio port. The company has moved on to the Lightning port, which will now work as a standard for charging, data transfer and also as an audio port. Apple has also bundled EarPods with lightning connector and a Lightning to 3.5mm audio connector for those who want to use their existing headphones. With the Lightning connector, Apple claims to offer better audio output compared to 3.5mm port.

Apple also unveiled its first truly wireless AirPods headsets that will set you back by Rs 15,400, and will be available in late October. These headphones use custom W1 chipset for intelligent, high-efficiency playback, while offering consistent and reliable connection.

New Touch ID sensor: Since the first iPhone, the Home button has been quite important. A single tap exits the app and brings you to the home screen. A double tap lets you switch between apps. The Home button also doubles as a Touch ID fingerprint scanner to unlock the smartphone and also unlock apps such as Wallet, Notes, and more. Now, while the physical home button with Touch ID sensor is still present on the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, it is no longer clickable. Apple has gone for a capacitive touch button.

Camera: Apple has always given utmost importance to photography on its iPhones. With the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the company has continued to improve the camera capabilities. The iPhone 6s featured a 12-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/2.2. Now, with the iPhone 7, the company is still sticking to 12-megapixel sensor, but going with a larger aperture of f/1.8 for improved low light photography.

Apple has also included optical image stabilization (OIS) to ensure you are able to click blur-free photos. While the earlier iPhone had True Tone dual LED flash, the new iPhone comes with four LED flash – two cool and two warm tones. ALSO READ:  Should you buy the Apple iPhone 7?

For selfies and FaceTime video calls, the iPhone 7 features a 7-megapixel front-facing HD camera of aperture f/2.2, compared to 5-megapixel HD camera of aperture f/2.2 on the iPhone 6s. It also lets you record 1080p videos at 30fps.

Apple A10 chip: The iPhone 7 duo is powered by Apple’s 64-bit A10 Fusion processor. The A10 chip comes with 64-bit architecture, which Apple claims is two times faster than the A8 chipset on the iPhone 6. The chipset is highly efficient and delivers up to two hours more battery life compared to iPhone 6s, Apple said. The hexa core GPU inside the processor boosts graphics performance by up to three times compared to iPhone 6. It is paired with M10 motion co-processor, which enables hands-free “Hey Siri” voice activation.

Double onboard storage: The iPhone 6s was offered in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage variants. With the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple has doubled the storage to 32GB, 128GB and 256GB. The increased storage should be good enough to address the growing storage needs of users, by allowing them to have more photos, music, videos and other content on their iPhones.

Stereo Speaker: While the iPhone 6s featured a single speaker, the iPhone 7 now has stereo speakers. With the main speaker at the bottom, the earpiece acts as the second speaker when playing music or watching videos. Apple says that the new speaker system is twice as loud as the iPhone 6s.

Five color variants: The iPhone 5 was offered in silver and space gray variants. With iPhone 5s, Apple introduced gold color variant, whereas with iPhone 6s, the company introduced rose gold variant. Now, with the iPhone 7, Apple has as many as five color variants, including silver, gold, rose gold and two new colors – black and jet black with glossy finish.

Waterproofing: The iPhone 6s included water resistance capabilities, but Apple did not highlight it during the launch event, or anywhere in its marketing. However, with Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge and Galaxy Note 7 featuring superior water and dust resistance capabilities, Apple has officially revealed that the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus boast waterproofing capabilities with IP67 certification. This means, you can use the smartphones under light rains, shower or submerge them under one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

Weight and dimensions: While the dimensions of the iPhone 7 are same as the iPhone 6s, is lighter by 5 grams.

Network bands: Apple has included an advance LTE chipset on the iPhone 7 with speeds up to 450Mbps for faster data downloads, which is up to 50 percent faster compared to iPhone 6s, and three times faster than iPhone 6. It also supports VoLTE support for HD voice calling, and includes support for up to network 25 bands to offer best worldwide roaming experience across countries.
