Apple iPhone 8 5.5-inch variant rumored to feature OLED display and dual cameras setup

The latest rumors say that the OLED display will be available on the 5.5-inch variant of the iPhone 8. The rest would retain the LCD display.

Apple’s next generation iPhone, the iPhone 8, has already begun creating a buzz online with its leaks and rumors popping up every now and then. The iPhone 8 is expected to launch in 2017 and considering it will be launched alongside Apple’s 10-year-anniversary of iPhone, the expectations are very high from the next generation device. The reports on what the iPhone 8 could be bringing along with also have also raised one’s expectations. It has already been rumored that the iPhone 8 will come in display sizes of 4.7-inch, 5-inch and 5.5-inch. Adding to this was a report about Apple possibly ditching the LCD panels and opting for OLED display. A new development says that Apple will use OLED display only for the 5.5-inch variant.

According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the 5.5-inch variant of the iPhone 8 will come with an OLED display and a dual camera setup. He also said that there will be a 5.5-inch variant with LCD display with a dual camera set up as well. As for the 4.7-inch variant, presumably the lowest variant it is said to come with an LCD display but without dual cameras. However, there is no mention of a 5-inch variant of the iPhone 8 by the analyst. This news is akin to the report by Nikkei Asian Review which broke the news about the OLED display on the iPhone 8.

According to the report on Nikkei Asian Review, Tai Jeng-wu, CEO of electronics maker Sharp, which was acquired by Foxconn, said that the iPhone would be switching from LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) to OLED panels. He also mentioned that a new OLED facility is being built in Japan, and they can make OLED panels in the US too if their key customer demands so. The report had also mentioned that the OLED display will be exclusive to the 5.5-inch premium variant while the 4.7-inch and the 5-inch variants would retain the current LTPS display. Apple does use OLED display for its devices like the Apple Watch and the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. The iPhone 8 could be the first iPhone to come with an OLED display. A concept image showing the iPhone 8 with an OLED display had also been released online. It showed the iPhone 8 sporting a curved OLED display with dual cameras placed on the rear end. However the look and design of this concept iPhone 8 was highly different from the previously launched iPhones.

Adding to the rumors about the iPhone 8’s display, it is also expected to ditch the physical Home button and feature a 3D fingerprint scanner. In fact, a patent titled “Capacitive fingerprint sensor including an electrostatic lens” had been granted to Apple recently. This report goes in line with the OLED display on the iPhone 8, as the fingerprint scanner would be embedded below the display. As of now, Xiaomi’s Mi 5s features Qualcomm’s Sense ID ultrasonic fingerprint sensor which is placed below the front glass of the smartphone. As all these reports complement each other, the likeability of the iPhone 8 sporting an OLED display also rises. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves now. Going back to previous reports, Ming-Chi Kuo had also said that the iPhone 8 will come in an all-glass design like the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4s. Ming also said that Apple would want to ride on the popularity of the jet black model , but tweak it a little bit to make the iPhone lesser prone to scratches. The Apple iPhone 8 has also been rumored to come with wireless charging facility, something which was initially expected on the iPhone 7. The wireless technology on the iPhone 8 is said to charge the smartphone within a distance of 15 feet. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 8 could boast truly wireless charging capabilities
