Apple iPhone 8 could boast truly wireless charging capabilities

Latest rumors hint that the iPhone 8 will bring in a new form of wireless charging technology that will be able to charge the device from a distance of 15 feet.

Even as the demand for the newest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is difficult to meet, anticipation about the yet-to-be-announced iPhone 8 is already mounting up. Next year, when the iPhone turns 10, it is expected that Apple will bring in some key changes to the most successful device from its kitty. Most likely called the iPhone 8, there are a lot of speculations already doing the rounds. While some suggest an OLED display, others point to a variation in terms of size. Apple has experimented with its charging connectors since its first iPhone in 2007 that featured a 30-pin dock connector to the lightning connector with the introduction of the iPhone 5. With the upcoming iPhone 8, it is expected that the company will finally introduce a way to allow iPhone lovers charge the smartphone wirelessly. Wireless charging, introduced by Samsung with its Galaxy S6, allows one to charge the smartphone with a help of a charging pad instead of the regular plug and charge experience. Compatible smartphones are embedded with wireless charging technology into the hardware for the intended seamless experience. With Apple s upcoming iPhone 8, it is expected that the charging experience will be truly wireless. According to latest rumors, the iPhone 8 will come with some sort of module that will connect to a transmitter that gets plugged into a wall outlet. It will allow the smartphone to be charged when it is within 15 feet of the transmitter. If such a module is indeed installed in the new iPhone 8, the charging experience would truly turn out to be wireless. It is rumored that Apple is working with a company called Energous for the new type of truly wireless technology. A report on PhoneArena notes that Energous earlier said that it was working with a “tier 1” manufacturer in the smartphone world. Adding more weight to the likely connection is the recent investment of $10 million by Dialog Semiconductor, a company from which Apple accounts for around 70 percent of their total sales. The proposed long-distance charging also falls in tune with Apple s recent patent for the technology that uses over-the-air electricity to low-power devices within a distance of one meter. Titled, Wireless Power Utilization in a Local Computing Environment, the patent describes the system as one which relies on near-field magnetic resonance to provide power to nearby devices. Earlier this month, it was also reported that Apple s manufacturing partner Foxconn is testing wireless charging modules for the iPhone 8. However, inclusion of the feature is dependent on whether Foxconn can boost the yield rate to a satisfactory level. Yield rate measures the number of satisfactory units in the production of a batch of components. It is still unclear if the purported wireless charging module will be included in all the variants of the smartphone or be reserved for the premium-end variant.

Industry analysts as well as consumers have tremendous hopes with the upcoming iPhone 8. Apple jumped the bandwagon of offering dual-camera modules with its latest iPhone 7 Plus. With the iPhone 8, it is expected that Apple fans could be in for a special treat. It is rumored that the iPhone 8 will be completely redesigned and will have a glass back instead of the current design that features an aluminum rear. Industry sources further reveal that the rear glass panels will be supplied by China s Biel Crystal Manufactory and Lens Technology. However, it is not to be confused with an all-glass smartphone as the glass rear and front will still be put together in a metal casing which could either be in aluminum or stainless steel.

Other expectations with the iPhone 8 include a new display size. It is speculated that Apple will introduce a size which will sit between the smaller and the phablet-sized version at 5-inches. The iPhone 8 is rumored to come in three display sizes of 4.7-inch, 5-inch, and 5.5-inch. However, as the 4.7-inch model and 5-inch model will sit closely, it could also mean that the smallest version will take an exit with the iPhone 8, leaving just the new 5-inch model and the phablet-sized 5.5-inch Plus variant.
