Rumors about the iPhone 8 have already surfaced online with reports pouring in about the next generation iPhone. In particular, what has been talked about the most so far, has been the iPhone 8’s look and design. What had been expected in the iPhone 7, could be brought in the iPhone 8. The most recent report pointed out that the iPhone 8 will come in three size variants of 4.7-inch, 5-inch and 5.5-inch. It had also been reported that Apple would go back to using the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s-like glass back design for the iPhone 8. The latest news on the iPhone 8 is that Apple will use curved OLED display.

This news comes from the same source as that of the size variants. As reported by PhoneArena, the report somehow confirms that Apple will be using OLED display for the iPhone 8. Foxconn, the major company involved in manufacturing the iPhone had acquired electronics maker Sharp. Tai Jeng-wu, who is the president of Sharp and also a Foxconn executive, had talked about the OLED display on future iPhones while addressing students at Tatung University. During his speech, Tai said that in order for Apple to bring itself back from the recent drop in sales, then it would have to opt for OLED panels.

Tai was quoted as saying, “The iPhone has been evolving and now it is switching from LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) to OLED panels. We don’t know whether Apple’s OLED iPhones will be a hit, but if Apple doesn’t walk down this path and transform itself, there will be no innovation. It is a crisis but it is also an opportunity.” Tai further said, “We are now building a new [OLED] facility in Japan.” He adds, “We can make [OLED panels] in the U.S. too. If our key customer demands us to manufacture in the U.S., is it possible for us not to do so?” The report on Nikkei Asian Review, however says that the OLED display will be exclusive to the 5.5-inch premium variant but the 4.7-inch and the 5-inch variants will retain the current LTPS panel.

Adding to this report, is a concept made for the iPhone 8 variant which will reportedly feature curved OLED display. The concept image as released by GizmoChina, shows the iPhone 8 sporting an OLED display with dual cameras on the rear end which looks completely different than any of the existing iPhones. This image shows the iPhone 8 without the curved edges which makes it look more like Sony Xperia smartphones or even the Nextbit Robin for that matter. The LED flash of the rear camera lens are also awkwardly placed in the center. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 8 could feature Xiaomi Mi 5s-like capacitive fingerprint sensor

The Home button is also missing and what has replaced it looks like a 3D fingerprint scanner as in the Xiaomi Mi 5s smartphone. If we recall, Apple had recently been granted a patent for a capacitive fingerprint sensor with electrostatic lens. The OLED display and the capacitive fingerprint scanner could be a possibility and considering how Apple had taken major steps with the iPhone 7, we could be in for a bigger surprise with the iPhone 8. With the iPhone 8, Apple could be reviving something old like the glass-back in the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s, and something new with the OLED display.
