Apple s recent release of the HomePod firmware has helped reveal some features for the upcoming iPhone 8. iOS developers have been digging out the firmware to find code for possible features of the iPhone 8. iOS developer Guilherme Rambo via Twitter (spotted by Mac Rumors) revealed the finding along with the source code image. The code mentions TLAttentionAwareness0bserver , which is believed to be the said feature that will be provided by the iPhone 8 s infrared sensor. The iPhone 8 is expected to come with 3D infrared sensors which will be used for facial recognition, a first for an iPhone. The same sensor is speculated to be used for detecting when the user is looking at the screen and mute notification sounds accordingly.
This feature may not seem like a major development for the iPhone 8 but it does highlight how advanced Apple s facial recognition technique would be. Apple s inclusion of facial recognition could possibly be the primary biometric authentication for the iPhone 8. It was recently reported that the facial recognition on the iPhone 8 will be able to detect the user s face even when it s on a flat surface.
