Apple iPhone 8 could mute notifications when the user is looking at the screen

This feature could be possible with the rumored 3D infrared sensors on the iPhone 8.

Apple s recent release of the HomePod firmware has helped reveal some features for the upcoming iPhone 8. iOS developers have been digging out the firmware to find code for possible features of the iPhone 8. iOS developer Guilherme Rambo via Twitter (spotted by Mac Rumors) revealed the finding along with the source code image. The code mentions TLAttentionAwareness0bserver , which is believed to be the said feature that will be provided by the iPhone 8 s infrared sensor. The iPhone 8 is expected to come with 3D infrared sensors which will be used for facial recognition, a first for an iPhone. The same sensor is speculated to be used for detecting when the user is looking at the screen and mute notification sounds accordingly.

This feature may not seem like a major development for the iPhone 8 but it does highlight how advanced Apple s facial recognition technique would be. Apple s inclusion of facial recognition could possibly be the primary biometric authentication for the iPhone 8. It was recently reported that the facial recognition on the iPhone 8 will be able to detect the user s face even when it s on a flat surface. The topic of security on the iPhone 8 has been a debatable one with multiple reports citing different options. Apple s aiming for a bezel-less OLED display iPhone with no physical Touch ID. Some reports suggest that the Touch ID will be embedded underneath the display, or it could be present on the rear chassis. However, with the facial recognition possessing interesting features, it may possibly replace the Touch ID. It is also said that Apple s facial recognition will be able to detect more data and make it more secure than the Touch ID.
