Apple iPhone 8 dummy model leak hints at edge-to-edge display, no rear-mounted fingerprint scanner

Will the iPhone 8 have the fingerprint scanner on the back or front?

iPhone 8 dummy leak

Apple is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its iPhone this year. Though the company is months away from launching the new iPhones, a spate of leaks and rumors have continued to hint at what the final devices will look like. Based on the rumors so far, the talking points of the upcoming iPhone 8 are the radical design changes, including the return of glass back, removal of the front home button and bezel-less display. A new leak now adds more fuel to fire with regards to the design changes. Also Read - Apple is likely to add this old iPhone model to its vintage product list on December 31

According to leaked live images of what s believed to be the iPhone 8, the smartphone features a glass body with aluminum border whereas the front seemingly has an edge-to-edge display. The new leak corroborates previous rumors regarding the inclusion of a vertical rectangle pattern for the new dual camera. One of the interesting takeaways from the leaked photos is that there is no fingerprint scanner on the rear either. It could be possible that Apple will be embedding the fingerprint scanner under the display, which might be inspired by Samsung s haptic tech on the display of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones.

What makes this leak more interesting is that a recent leak had shown fingerprint scanner moving to the rear panel. It was argued that Apple was facing production challenges with the adding scanner under the display. AppleInsider last week reported, Apple has evaluated Synaptic s optical fingerprint solution, but that it has not been qualified. Therefore, moving the fingerprint scanner on the back made a lot of sense, and perhaps would have brought the iPhone experience closer to Android s, which runs on a number of smartphones with rear-mounted fingerprint scanners. However, this new leak suggests that there could still be the possibility of Apple proceeding with the scanner beneath the display. Not that the technology of having fingerprint scanner under the display does not exist, for Apple, the move will help make more room for display without increasing the size of the smartphone. The latest leak, anyway, gives the impression of Apple embracing the edge-to-edge display. The same leak further reveals that the iPhone 8 will be same 7.1mm slim as the iPhone 7 and have approximately same dimensions as the predecessor.

According to rumors so far, the iPhone 8 may come with a 3D sensing front camera, support for wireless charging, and a 5.8-inch OLED front panel with 521ppi pixel density. It will run on Apple s latest A11 processor along with 3GB of RAM.
