Apple’s newest iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are the first from the company’s premium smartphone portfolio to come with support for fast charging. It is said that the iPhone 8 can fast charge from 0 to 50 percent in 30 minutes. However, these require the right kind of equipment, which is not offered in the box, to achieve charging speeds as advertised. But how fast is the fast charging as compared to the year older iPhone 7 Plus and other competitors? A video posted on YouTube by Xeetechcare says that the said support for fast charging is false and the iPhone 7 Plus is relatively faster. Folks at Mashable decided to test the charging speeds and used the specific equipment by Apple to test both devices, and here’s what they found. For the test, the team used Apple‘s advertised 29-watt power adapter for the iPhone 8 Plus and to compare, they used the iPhone 7 Plus. Both phones’ batteries were drained down to 0 percent, and then put in Airplane mode, and brightness lowered to 50 percent after they automatically turned on when plugged in.
It was found that the iPhone 8 Plus achieved battery levels of 27 percent in 15 minutes of charging, and 54 percent in 30 minutes using the fast charger. In comparison, the iPhone 7 Plus reached 15 percent in 15 minutes and 29 percent in 30 minutes, essentially at the rate of one percent per minute, while the iPhone 8 Plus gained 1.8 percent per minute. This makes the iPhone 8 Plus charge almost 86 percent faster than the iPhone 7 Plus. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 8 Review: When you know you want it, but still ask questions
Now for achieving 100 percent battery levels, the team again drained both the phones down to zero and found that the iPhone 8 Plus took 1 hour and 50 minutes to reach the full power, while the iPhone 7 Plus took almost twice the amount of time, at 2 hour and 32 minutes to gain 100 percent juice.
While it is established that between the iPhone family, the iPhone 8 Plus definitely charges faster, but how well does it fare against competitors? Another set of fast charging tests was conducted by YouTuber Danny Winget where he compared the iPhone 8 Plus with Samsung Galaxy Note 8, OnePlus 5, and HTC U11. OnePlus 5, which comes with its own Dash Charger, topped the tests as it could attain 96 percent in an hour, followed by HTC U11 came second at 85 percent, followed by the iPhone 8 Plus which achieved 82 percent battery level, while the Galaxy Note 8 lagged at just 69 percent. So the end result, as suggested by these tests, is that the iPhone 8 Plus tops in Apple’s family, while outside, it is the OnePlus 5 which takes the cake for fast charging support.
