As Apple’s iPhone event inches closer, reports on the launch details are getting firmer. Apple will reportedly launch the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and the iPhone 8 on September 12. The iPhone 8 continues to be the highlight especially with Apple’s plans of ditching the physical Touch ID sensor. Bloomberg’s latest report confirms the physical Touch ID’s absence on the iPhone 8, and also gives a glimpse on its functionalities.

According to the images of the iPhone 8 viewed by Bloomberg, Apple has tested the device without the Touch ID. As seen in past leaks, the iPhone 8 sports an almost all-screen design with a small cutout on top for the camera lens and sensors. Replacing the Touch ID would be an iPad-like dock bar with gestures to carry out basic functions on the iPhone 8. On this new bar, the user can drag it up till the middle to open the iPhone. When an app is opened, the user can make a gesture like swiping up to close it and return to the home screen. This was demonstrated through an animation which shows the app being sucked back to its icon after it’s closed.

The multitasking feature on the iPhone at present works by double tapping the Touch ID, and recent apps show up as a stack of cards. On the iPhone 8, this interface will be changed with the recent apps showing as standalone cards that one can swipe through. While the text description seems quite difficult to understand, a mockup of this redesigned dock bar has been created by Olivier Charavel (via MacRumors). The home screen on the iPhone with the said dock bar is presented in the mock up, as well as an example of Apple’s Health app. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 8 wireless charging to be slower than Android smartphones: Report

In addition to this, Guilherme Rambo also shared a video demonstrating the floating dock bar and how it would look on the iPhone 8.

While this report suggests that Apple will indeed ditch the physical Touch ID, the question of it being embedded under the display is still unanswered. The dock bar does carry out functions for opening the iPhone and the apps, but the biometric authentication for the iPhone 8 still hasn’t been clarified.
